Synopsis
Struggling to land her first kiss, June, a college-bound culinary prodigy, is pressured by her cooler cousin, Maeve, to get thinner to get the job done. Under Maeve’s wing, June trades one-pieces for bikinis and s’mores for smoothies, but her parents fight back. Flaking on family duty to flirt, June questions if the risks are worth the reward.
Why Now?
Culturally, we’re obsessed with skinny. The most common eating disorder is an undiagnosed one, but we’ve yet to see a relatable movie about it. Cautionary tales of thin women wilting in hospital beds make audiences shrink away. Surface Tension, a dark comedy, portrays the self-sustaining eating disorder. The kind you’ll find at most dinner tables. As the girls bend over backwards for male attention I hope that the audience will see themselves, laugh at the things they’ve put themselves through, then question the foundation of their habits.
