Synopsis
Struggling to land her first kiss, a college bound teen is pressured to get thinner to get the job done. Under the wing of her cool cousin, she trades one-pieces for bikinis, and s’mores for smoothies. But her family fights back. Finding herself flaking on family duty to flirt, June questions if the risks are worth the reward.
Director's Statement
The most common eating disorder is an undiagnosed one. The kind that keeps women eating half their plate and squeezing into jeans one size too small -- a culturally self sustaining obsession. While we have seen movies of women ending up in hospitals, thin and helpless, we’ve yet to see a relatable story. Surface Tension, a family-comedy, is aimed at portraying this all-too-common reality not at its extremes, but as the undercurrent that pervades all the decisions a young woman makes. It is often when we laugh at ourselves, that we can best relate to ourselves. As the audience sees themselves, I hope they can begin to unroot that which lives just below the surface.
